ICT CS Eliud Owalo on Thursday launched free GoK Public WIFI Hotspots at Masii Market in Mwala Sub- County and Wote town in Machakos and Makueni Counties respectively.
According to Owalo, the initiative will expedite accessible communication amongst Kenyans of all walks of life and improve their living standards in the digital era.
“The public Wi-Fi will create more than one million jobs for our youth, as well as make our public spaces livelier”, the CS said adding that this is aimed at reducing the cost of data for Kenyans.
"This is part of our ongoing government's provision of free Internet to Kenyan youth and businesses to access online markets and digital jobs at their homes," said CS Owalo
Further, the CS said that the Government will install 25,000 such free public hotspots countrywide to help local farmers and traders maximize on their profits. Owalo added that the government has currently increased government services from 350 to 7543 on the e-citizen platform.
The CS added that the government is also set to roll out intelligent affordable mobile phones at a cost of Ksh 5, 000 to enable Kenyans to access government services without having to necessarily visit government offices.
The government will soon establish digital hubs in all 1450 wards in the country.
Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua said that the free Wifi hotspots will connect Kenyans in the remote parts of the country to the whole world.
CS Mutua called on the county government to work with the national government to roll out additional Wi-Fi hotspots in public institutions within the area.
