GOVERNMENT URGED TO HASTEN THE TRANSITION FROM FOSSIL FUELS TO CLEAN ENERGY

The government has been urged to hasten the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy by stopping the commissioning of new fossil fuel projects.

University students held a sensitization walk on the streets of Machakos Town where they urged the government to ensure the infrastructure to transition to green energy was in place without further delay.

Marching under the auspice of Green Faith,a lobby group which is advocating for embracing of green energy in order to stop frequent droughts brought about by climate change, the students also asked financiers of fossil fuel projects to cease funding the same in order for African governments to effect the switch.

Speaking today at Mulu Mutisya Gardens where the group started the March, GreenFaith Global Director Meryne Wara of the project will cause more damage to the environment and livelihoods than the promised benefits.

According to her,Kenya pipeline will displace 1000 people, interrupt wildlife and marine life as it passed through a game park and a lake.

"We are calling on the government to adhere to the non-proliferation of fossil fuels treaty which seeks to stop new fossil fuels projects, transition to Green energy and create green jobs,"said Ms Wara.

She pointed out that Kenya had high potential in green energy resources such as geothermal, solar and wind power generation which was yet to be fully exploited.

Fossil fuels increase greenhouse emmissions which lead to global warming.

The students also expressed solidarity with their counterparts in Uganda who were arrested as they campaigned against fossil fuels.
