Machakos Residents Warned Against Indiscriminate Dumping Of Waste. Asked To Observe Cleanness!

According to Machakos Water & Environment Minister Catherine Mutanu Raphael, bylaws aimed to curtail reckless disposal of solid waste will be soon made.

This has come at a time when Machakos dwellers have developed a habit of disposing garbage at undesignated areas.

Minister Mutanu said that those who will be found throwing garbage at areas which are not designated for garbage collection, will be apprehended and fined in accordance with the law.

Mutanu observed that reckless disposing of garbage has posed a big challenge in the management of Athi-river.

"We destroy our environment when we fail to correctly dispose of solid waste. Cleanliness of our Machakos starts at individual level and every person is expected to dispose of waste only at designated areas, including all the companies ” she added.

The water minister issued a stern warning to factories in Mavoko that are discharging their effluent into Athi River.

Residents told Rada TV that their plants which were irrigated with water from the river have withered and dried up due to the water pollution. Others said their livestock were also affected after drinking the water.

The polluted water has gone downstream beyond Kinanie to Kilimbogo and even to Thwake Dam in Makueni County.

Further, residents have threatened to hold demonstrations if urgent measures were not taken to address the situation.

She was addressing the Media at Athiriver in Mavoko Sub-County during World Environment Day Celebrations, where she oversaw planting over 500 trees in Athiriver, an exercise that took place at KMC Grounds.
