Makueni County First Lady Hon.Anita Mutula has said that Period Poverty is a global issue affecting those who don't have access to safe, hygienic Menstrual products they need, and/or who are unable to manage their Period with dignity, sometimes due to community stigma and sanction.
In collaboration with Proctor and Gamble; Bethel Network, Anita Mbinya Foundation, and County Government Departments, On Monday, they commemorated Menstrual Hygiene day and also Launched Menstrual Hygiene Management Program at Watema Primary school, Kee ward, Kaiti Sub-County.
According to Anita Mutula, one million school-age girls miss an average of four school days per month because of their Menstrual cycle and no access to Menstrual hygiene products.
Health talks were held by Nurses MaryGoretti and Clementine to children from Watema, Kasunguni, Ndumani, Muusini, Kitandi and Nguluni Primary school(s). Different speakers noted the importance of keeping girls in school while on their Period and the need to end period shame.
Anita emphasized that stakeholders including men and boys should become ambassadors or change makers who challenge the status quo of the myths and misconceptions that allow fear, shame or discomfort during menstruation.
It is a day that brought together; Deputy County Commissioner, Joe Mwagala, Kee ward MCA , Albanus Manzu, Ms Hellen , Quality Assurance Officer amongst other stakeholders
