"We Are Keen To Ensure Prisons Uphold The Human Rights And Dignity Of Inmates"- Mwengi Mutuse

Kibwezi West Member of the National Assembly Mwengi Mutuse has said that they are keen to ensure that prisons uphold the Human rights and dignity of inmates.

According to Mutuse, particularly each person who finds themselves in a prison, should have their own bed,mattress,blanket as a minimum quality of life

JLAC began an important engagement with the State Department of correctional services on ways to reform its key service departments.

Mutuse says that justice sector institutions including the DPP and judiciary, must find ways to urgently decongest prisons.

"There are prisons that have three to five times their capacity.This must change through creating ways which don't require huge resources that the country doesn't have"- said Mutuse

He went on;

"We examined ways of strengthening probation and aftercare services to support decongestion and reintegration of offenders into society.

Prison enterprises which among other products manufacture quality furniture, require modernization and good corporate governance. This is a potential area where Kenya’s economy can leverage to tame capital flight through imported furniture. We are happy that the Kenya Kwanza Government has identified this for budgetary resourcing.

Equally, important are prison farms which must now become part of Kenya’s food security agenda"- said Mutuse
